finding out how someone never exposed to quilting ends up pursuing this wonderful hobby&nbsp;is always interesting, and Dennis Joynt&#8217;s journey is no exception.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;font-size: 12pt\">Please join us to&nbsp;learn a bit more about this dedicated&nbsp;man, a man who, along with his wife Lynn&#8217;s assistance, is creating quilts for the&nbsp;<em>Quilts of Valor Foundation<\/em>, a very worthy organization that&nbsp;aims to <em>&#8216;&#8230;cover all combat service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor.&#8217;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;font-size: 12pt\">Dennis, the middle child of a family of seven children (<em>including three girls and four boys<\/em>), was raised by parents who&nbsp;both served in the U.S. armed forces, his father serving as&nbsp;an enlisted man&nbsp;in the U.S. Coast Guard and his mother serving as an officer in the U.S. Navy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;font-size: 12pt\">And although&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;font-size: 12pt\">Dennis was a <em>YMCA Indian Guide<\/em> and a <em>Boy Scout<\/em>, and eventually became an <em>Eagle Scout<\/em>, pursuits that could have, at the very least, exposed young Dennis to sewing on merit badges, Dennis didn&#8217;t learn to sew on a machine until he was&nbsp;in the U.S. Navy, where he at one time&nbsp;worked in a &#8216;sail loft&#8217; and learned to repair large awnings while&nbsp;serving in Vietnam.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;font-size: 12pt\">So how did Dennis become a quilter?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;font-size: 12pt\">A request for a quilt from one of his granddaughters was the impetus and, at age 60, Dennis became a quilter!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;font-size: 12pt\">Dennis shared that his first machine was a <em>Thread Banger<\/em>, a machine he&nbsp;purchased when his mom, whom he was visiting in FL, gave him the money to purchase it so he could make the requested quilt for his granddaughter.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 407px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-161\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hobbsbatting.com\/hobbs-batting-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/05\/Janome-Thread-Banger-Machine.jpg\" alt=\"Janome Thread Banger Machine (image)\" width=\"397\" height=\"322\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.hobbsbatting.com\/hobbs-batting-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/05\/Janome-Thread-Banger-Machine.jpg 505w, http:\/\/www.hobbsbatting.com\/hobbs-batting-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/05\/Janome-Thread-Banger-Machine-300x244.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 397px) 100vw, 397px\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;font-size: 12pt\">Janome Thread Banger Machine<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;font-size: 12pt\">Then in January 2009, Dennis saw an article in his local&nbsp;newspaper &#8211; the article featured a local group that was making <em>Quilts of Valor (QOV) <\/em>quilts. The group was looking for volunteers and would be holding a meeting where work on these charity quilts would take place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;font-size: 12pt\">Dennis went solo to that first meeting and the rest, as they say, is history &#8211; wife <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;color: #0000ff\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;text-decoration: underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.legion.org\/riders\/236268\/what-i-am-here-do\" target=\"_blank\">Lynn soon joined him in making the <em>Quilts of Valor<\/em> and they enjoy working together<\/a><\/span> and with their local <em>QOV<\/em> group, with Dennis using a <em>Gammill<\/em> and his beloved <em>Thread Banger<\/em>, and his wife using a&nbsp;<em>Brother<\/em> machine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;font-size: 12pt\">On January 11, 2009, Dennis was voted in as the VA Coordinator for the <em>American Legion<\/em> in his area and this position provided him the opportunity to spend a lot of time with the local VA Cemetery Director, and eventually the local Veterans Home Director, a man responsible for a home that housed 100+ veterans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;font-size: 12pt\">Dennis learned from the Veterans Home Director that their residents didn&#8217;t have anything &#8216;personal&#8217; in their rooms and Dennis&nbsp;immediately set his mind to creating quilts for each of the residents who would be using the home&#8217;s 100+ 68&#8243;x84&#8243; beds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;font-size: 12pt\">And of course we all know what that means, <em>right?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;font-size: 12pt\">Shopping for supplies!<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-168 \" src=\"http:\/\/www.hobbsbatting.com\/hobbs-batting-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/05\/Fabric-Receipt-161x300.jpg\" alt=\"Fabric Receipt (image)\" width=\"122\" height=\"226\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.hobbsbatting.com\/hobbs-batting-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/05\/Fabric-Receipt-161x300.jpg 161w, http:\/\/www.hobbsbatting.com\/hobbs-batting-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/05\/Fabric-Receipt.jpg 447w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 122px) 100vw, 122px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;font-size: 12pt\">That first shopping trip resulted in an $837 tab just for fabric &#8211; as we quilters know, only the beginning of what&#8217;s needed to create 100+ quilts. <em>One Quilt of Valor can cost up to $250 to complete.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;font-size: 12pt\">Dennis gladly paid that initial fabric tab&nbsp;and, although he does get a discount on thread through <em>Linda&#8217;s Electric Quilters<\/em>, and he&#8217;s received several donations of batting from <em>Hobbs<\/em>, in addition to several&nbsp;small cash donations from the <em>Knights of Columbus of Wichita<\/em>, <em>AARP<\/em>, the <em>Retired Teachers of Laramie County<\/em> and from a local couple who heard about his charitable work, he&nbsp;and Lynn have footed the bill for most every other associated expense since then.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;font-size: 12pt\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;color: #0000ff\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;text-decoration: underline\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wyomingnews.com\/news\/local_news\/cheyenne-biker-and-his-wife-make-quilts-for-veterans\/article_cf947f90-ec2a-11e6-ad11-8b8434a5b857.html\" target=\"_blank\">As Dennis continues his work<\/a><\/span>, including making quilts which are provided to veteran hospice patients, then used to cover the veteran&nbsp;in a <em>&#8216;Final Salute<\/em>&#8216; upon their passing, lie on the deceased&#8217;s coffin and then be given to family members, we encourage&nbsp;industry companies and individuals to&nbsp;consider donating materials and\/or money to assist&nbsp;Dennis, and other makers of <em>Quilts of Valor<\/em> quilts, to continue their work &#8211;<em> what better way is there to show our veterans how much we appreciate their sacrifice?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino, serif;font-size: 12pt\">To donate materials and\/or money to assist Dennis &amp;
